Having signed a three-and-a-half year contract with Arsenal which is reportedly going to make him the club’s highest paid player, Mesut Ozil is expected to be a leader in the Gunners’ dressing room. According to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, the 29-year-old playmaker is definitely one of the best players in the world, and he believes Ozil has all it takes to lead his teammates on and off the pitch

“You expect from him that he becomes the leader and takes responsibility and leads the team to success,” Wenger said.

When asked on Friday about Ozil’s new contract extension, the Frenchman couldn’t hide his happiness to see that a player of such quality stays with the club. He said it was a great news and accomplishment to see that the player has committed his future to the North London club.

“Many predicted he wouldn’t commit and not sign. It is good news for us – if you can keep a player of that calibre is of course good news,” he said.

Wenger also told reporters that he expects him to lead the team to greater success in the future.

Ozil who joined the Gunners in 2014 from Real Madrid has been an integral part of Arsene Wenger’s side, and will hope to continue his incredible form for the Gunners.

Wenger further admitted the player’s presence is more needed than ever as his team are on the verge of missing out on next season’s Champions League.

Having signed Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United respectively, Wenger will hope to see his players scoring more goals and also winning matches in order to move up in the league standings. They are at home to Everton on Saturday for a must-win fixture.
